The Heat Is On!  Now’s the Time to Prepare Your Plants for Summer
Water - Use It Wisely Presents Tips for “Summer-izing” Plants

Summer preparations are underway – summer camps, vacation schedules, swimsuit shopping. But there’s one more thing that needs your attention -- your landscape. Scorched plants needn’t be a foregone conclusion. With a little planning and the right tools, you can help ease your plants through those hot summer months.

Water - Use it Wisely offers tips for “summer-scaping” your landscape on its Web site, www.wateruseitwisely.com. The site also features an interactive watering guide, which helps you determine precisely how much water you need for turf, xeriscape plants and trees.

“We can learn a lot about how our plants adapt to the heat and sun by just looking at our low water-use desert adapted plants,” (says Kent Newland, Water Resource Specialist with the City of Phoenix). “Light colored leaves reflect the sun, smaller leaves use water more efficiently, waxy leaves hold in moisture and of course, cacti are designed to store water. These are just some of the adaptations that nature creates to help plants stay alive during the summer. Plants can teach us a lot about using and conserving water.”

The average Arizonan uses 138 gallons of water per day, with as much as two-thirds of that water used outdoors. Proper water use not only encourages conservation of this precious resource, it also ensures more vibrant, attractive landscaping. Proper watering year-round improves the odds of plant survival. By watering deeply and less frequently, roots grow deeper into the soil where they are better buffered from the heat and sun.

On its Web site, Water – Use It Wisely provides additional tips for preparing and protecting summer landscapes, including:

  • Check irrigation systems for leaks and adjust timers to water early in the morning to minimize evaporation
  • Fertilize non-native plants
  • Select well-adapted plants for replanting
  • Use mulch around your plants to hold in the soil’s moisture
  • Learn about your plants’ water needs
  • Remove weeds that rob the soil of nutrients and moisture
