Xeriscape Garden Designed for Teaching

The City of Scottsdale, Arizona, recently opened one of the largest xeriscape demonstration gardens in the state. The six-acre garden, adjacent to Scottsdale’s state-of-the-art water treatment plant was developed to show residents and visitors how to make xeriscape work for them. With an emphasis on teaching, the garden includes four outdoor classrooms ideal for hands-on demonstrations, signs addressing common landscaping questions about drip irrigation and plant light requirements in addition to tips for using less water outdoors. In 2008, the water conservation staff, which maintains and operates the garden, will offer free workshops that will include topics such as landscape design and maintenance, rainwater harvesting, plant selection and tree pruning. Plants for the garden were selected from deserts around the world and show people the beauty and uniqueness of water-friendly landscape.

Baking with a Water Conservation Twist

Pumpkin Drop, also known as Wayne Drop’s country cousin in the City of Glendale’s water conservation office, recently entered a highly competitive pumpkin-decorating contest. While Wayne Drop delivers the water conservation message in Glendale’s metropolitan areas, Pumpkin Drop cultivates water conservation awareness in their more rural areas. Pitted against several other City of Glendale departments, Pumpkin Drop took home fourth place. Congratulations, Pumpkin, and to the Environmental Resources Department for keeping water conservation top-of-mind in a very creative way.
